Vietnamese star fighter to attend int’l championship in Vietnam next year

The 2023 MTGP Vietnam Championship is the first tournament to be organized by the Muay Thai Grand Prix (MTGP) in Vietnam, featuring top Vietnamese and international Muay Thai fighters.

The MTGP is the organizer of professional events of Muay Thai, a combat sport of Thailand that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques, at the highest level in the world.

Over the past 10 years, the MTGP has organized more than 50 live events in 15 countries, creating development opportunities for many Muay, kickboxing, and MMA (mixed martial arts) talents, according to its website.

At the 2023 MTGP Vietnam Championship, fighters will compete in 12 weight classes, including nine semi-professional weight classes and three professional weight categories.

Each winner of semi-professional matches will be awarded VND10 million (US$402) while professional match winners will receive VND35 million ($1,408) each.

Among the participants, Nguyen Tran Duy Nhat, 33, is a five-time WMF Muay Thai world champion and four-time Southeast Asian Games medalist in Muay Thai, in addition to having won medals at the IFMA World Muaythai Championships, Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, Asian Martial Arts Games, Asian Indoor Games, and Asian Beach Games.

Following Wednesday’s announcement, Vietnamese cable TV provider VTVcab and the MTGP signed a strategic agreement on the cooperation in organizing, producing, broadcasting, and communications activities of the MTGP championship.
